Let's talk about Rewards!

I posted more about ChargeQuest over on my Twitter recently, so let's review some of what I discussed.

In ChargeQuest, players gain "Rewards" for completing Quests and defeating Complications.

Rewards are usually one of four things: Experience, Fortune, Assets, or Healing.

  • Experience is simple: when you gain Experience, you assign a new Action to your Character/Adventuring Party. Different games will do this in different ways, and each Quest might do this differently as well - normally, only living creatures may gain Experience, but something like rescuing a Blacksmith may let weapons of yours gain Experience, too!
  • Fortune can also be called Luck, Karma, or even Information or Data. To put it simply, it's a token you may spend to reroll one of your dice! Almost every Quest or Complication has a chance of rewarding a Fortune token, and some may even award more than one!
  • Assets are one use only items that can give you a single dice in an Action, or occasionally have other effects. They represent potions, gadgets, favors, or anything that gives you a quick boost for a short time. They're very useful for covering what Actions your character or your party may not be skilled in!
  • Healing is the last kind of Reward. Also sometimes called Assistance, Healing lets you restore some of the health of your characters or revive/restore skills and items that were lost over the course of the game. A doctor can provide healing, but so could taking a moment to rest and meditate.

Different Quests will provide different chances of different rewards - for example, searching a library for ancient tomes may have the following 1d6 roll:

  • 1 - 3: Gain Fortune
  • 4 - 5: Gain Experience
  • 6: Gain an Asset

You could find information, learn something new, or discover something left behind!

With these four kinds of Rewards, there's lots of ways to make your Quests and Complications more interesting. Perhaps a raid on a warehouse is more difficult but always rewards Assets.. or maybe it's very easy to go talk to the locals at the bar, but it'll usually just reward you with Fortune. You could even have special Quests reward you with a new, permanent addition to your adventuring party!
